It may not be the most versatile tool but when you need to hold a pipe and fittings NOTHING else is better.
It has teeth that bite down into smooth round surfaces. Most of these suckers are heavy cast Iron but I found some lighter aluminum ones made by Ridgid here http://www.lighttoolsupply.com/Ridgid-Aluminum
This could really be helpful if you have to lug these around all day.
You want to be the big man and carry the heavy sucker then go for the Cast Iron Pipe Wrench.

A little history on the Pipe Wrench. Back in 1869 Daniel Stillson (another great man named Daniel as myself) invented this tool and patented it. Used to be called the Stillson wrench but a better name would have been The Dan The Man Wrench in my opinion.
Now you can use a Pipe Wrench for many things. One of my favorite things to do with a real heavy one is demolition work. I smash the crap out of things with it and I feel manly.
